Visiting Roses in May

# Visiting Roses in May

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Roses, and I’ll tell you why without trying to sell you anything.

The weather is honestly a bit of a gamble. The Costa Brava in May can be absolutely gorgeous – warm, bright days in the low-to-mid twenties, the kind of light that makes the bay look like a painting. It can also throw a week of grey skies and rain at you without much warning. Spring storms roll in off the Mediterranean occasionally, and you might lose a few days to it. Pack a layer and don’t book a holiday that’s entirely dependent on beach time, and you’ll be fine.

What May actually gives you is the town in a genuinely pleasant in-between state. The restaurants are open, including the decent local ones that quietly shut or reduce hours deep in winter. The marina is coming alive. The Saturday market is running. You can walk the coastal path toward Cap de Creus without fighting past tour groups. The beach exists and some days are warm enough to use it, though the sea is still cold – Catalans will be wearing jumpers while northern Europeans are swimming, which is always entertaining to watch.

Crowds are light by Costa Brava standards. The Spanish summer season doesn’t really crank up until late June, so you’re ahead of the main wave. You’ll share the place with some walkers, cycling groups, and a scattering of French visitors who come over the border. Hotels have availability and prices are noticeably more reasonable than July and August.

It’s worth visiting in May if you care more about actually experiencing the place than lying horizontal on a crowded beach. Foodies, walkers, people who want to eat at a decent restaurant without booking three weeks in advance – this is your window.

**One practical tip:** hire a car, even just for a day or two. The Cap de Creus natural park and the villages nearby are the real payoff in this region, and the bus connections are limited. Having wheels completely changes what’s accessible.
