Where to Stay in Santorini

Santorini rewards those willing to pay for the view, but knowing exactly where to spend your money separates a genuinely memorable trip from an expensive disappointment.

Oia is the undisputed crown jewel and the place most luxury travelers instinctively head. The blue-domed churches, the caldera panoramas, and the cave hotels carved directly into the volcanic cliffside justify every euro at properties like Canaves Oia Epitome or Mystique. Sunsets here are legendary, though legendary also means shoulder-to-shoulder crowds on the main walkway every evening between five and eight. Book a suite with a private plunge pool and you can watch the whole spectacle from your terrace with a glass of Assyrtiko, entirely undisturbed.

Imerovigli sits just south of Oia along the caldera ridge and offers nearly identical views with noticeably fewer tourists on the streets. It feels more residential, quieter at night, and the caldera-edge hotels here often undercut Oia prices while delivering comparable quality. For luxury travelers who want the view without the circus, this is the smarter choice. Firostefani, adjacent to the capital Fira, operates similarly and puts you within walking distance of the island’s best restaurants and ferry connections.

Avoid booking in Fira itself if you prioritize tranquility. It’s the island’s commercial heart, loud until late, and the caldera views from most hotels there are partially obscured or require a premium room that could buy you something far better in Oia or Imerovigli. Perissa and Kamari on the eastern coast are pleasant but entirely wrong for luxury caldera experiences.

At the luxury tier, the single most costly booking mistake people make is choosing based on photos alone. Many cave hotels photograph spectacularly but have brutal access, meaning dozens of steep steps with no elevator and no porter service for luggage. If mobility matters to you even slightly, or you’re traveling with heavy bags, call the hotel directly before booking and ask specifically about step counts and luggage assistance. The answer will tell you everything the website deliberately omits.

Book as far in advance as possible, particularly for summer. The best caldera suites disappear twelve months out.
