Where to Stay in Matera

Where to Stay in Matera

Matera is a compact city, which makes choosing where to stay surprisingly straightforward once you understand the basic geography. The city divides into two main zones: the Sassi, the ancient cave districts of Barisano and Caveoso, and the Piano, the newer hilltop town built above them. For mid-range travelers, the Sassi is almost always the right call, and here is why that matters.

Staying inside the Sassi puts you inside one of the most extraordinary urban landscapes on earth. You wake up before the day-trippers arrive, you see the canyon light shift at dawn, and you walk to dinner without fighting crowds at peak hours. Mid-range options here typically run between 80 and 160 euros per night and include converted cave hotels with exposed tuff walls, private bathrooms, and genuine atmosphere. Sassi Barisano tends to be slightly more polished and accessible, while Caveoso feels rawer and quieter. Both are excellent choices depending on whether you prefer convenience or solitude.

The Piano is fine for budget travelers who genuinely cannot stretch to Sassi prices, but mid-range money spent up there buys you a standard hotel experience you could have anywhere in southern Italy. You lose the entire point of visiting Matera. Avoid it unless logistics force your hand.

One practical note: noise can be an issue in peak summer. The Sassi echoes considerably, and restaurants operating late into the evening carry sound further than you expect. If you are a light sleeper, ask specifically for rooms set back from the main paths, not facing the terraces directly.

The booking mistake people consistently make is reserving accommodation in Matera as a one-night stopover. The city rewards slower visits. Two nights is the realistic minimum, and three nights lets you explore at an unhurried pace, visit the rock churches outside the city, and actually absorb the silence that makes the place feel genuinely ancient. Booking one night and rushing feels wasteful given travel time from Naples or Bari. Give yourself the time the city deserves.
