Where to Stay in Patmos
Where to Stay in Patmos
Patmos is a small island, so the question of where to stay is less about neighborhoods and more about which village suits your pace. For mid-range travelers, Skala is the obvious base. It’s the main port town, which means easy ferry connections, a solid selection of hotels in the 80 to 150 euro range, and enough tavernas and cafes to keep you well-fed without hunting too hard. The downside is that Skala gets the day-trippers from cruise ships, usually between ten in the morning and late afternoon. If you arrive and find the waterfront crowded, wait it out. By evening it transforms into something genuinely lovely and quiet.
Chora, the hilltop village crowned by the Monastery of Saint John, is the more atmospheric choice and honestly worth the slight inconvenience of needing a taxi or scooter to reach the port. Some smaller guesthouses and boutique stays here sit in the mid-range bracket, and waking up in a white Cycladic house with views over the caldera-like landscape is a different experience entirely from staying at sea level. The crowds thin dramatically up here even in summer, which aligns well with your preference for a low-crowd experience.
Grikos, a small bay on the southeastern side of the island, offers a quieter alternative with a handful of comfortable hotels directly facing the water. It lacks the character of Chora but the swimming is immediate and unhurried.
Avoid booking anything right on the main Skala waterfront if light sleep matters to you. Ferry engines and late-night taverna noise carry further than you’d expect.
Budget travelers can find decent rooms in family-run pensions in Skala’s backstreets, often around 50 to 70 euros, if booked directly with the property. Splurge travelers should look at Chora’s boutique options, where 200 euros gets you genuine charm rather than just amenities.
The booking mistake people repeatedly make on Patmos is leaving accommodation until the last minute assuming it’s under the radar. It isn’t. Availability shrinks fast from June onward, and the best mid-range rooms go first.
