# Zakynthos in April: Honest Thoughts

April in Zakynthos sits in that interesting middle ground where the island is properly awake but hasn’t yet been swallowed by the summer machine. That’s either exactly what you want or slightly frustrating, depending on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular. Around 19°C feels lovely if you’re coming from a grey northern winter, and you’ll probably spend most days in a light jacket that comes off by noon. But don’t expect to live in the sea. The water temperature lags behind the air by a good few weeks, hovering around 17°C, which most people describe as “refreshing” while getting out after thirty seconds. A few hardy swimmers manage it. Most just paddle and feel virtuous.

The 30mm of rain across the month means occasional proper showers, not constant drizzle. You might get two or three rainy days, often dramatic with dark clouds rolling in off the Ionian. The island looks genuinely beautiful when it’s green and damp. Pack a layer and don’t let it worry you.

Crowds are light, which is the real selling point. Navagio Beach is accessible and you can actually stand there without another tourist’s elbow in your face. The roads around the north of the island are driveable without traffic anxiety. Restaurants that exist for locals, not just tourists, are actually open and pleased to see you.

The trade-off is honest: some beach bars and water sports operations haven’t opened yet. A handful of hotels are still shuttered. If your holiday requires full resort infrastructure, you might hit occasional gaps.

This is an excellent trip for couples who want walking, scenery, good food and breathing space. It works well for anyone who finds peak-season Greek islands slightly exhausting. It’s less ideal for groups wanting buzzing nightlife or families needing every beach facility operational.

**Practical tip:** Rent a car immediately. April transport links are minimal and the island’s best bits, the Venetian villages inland, the dramatic west coast cliffs, genuinely require your own wheels.
