Lefkada earns its reputation honestly. The beaches here — particularly Porto Katsiki and Egremni — are genuinely among the best in Europe, the kind of white-cliff, turquoise-water combinations that look photoshopped but aren’t. Unlike most Greek islands, you drive here across a floating bridge from the mainland, which sounds unglamorous but actually works in your favour. No ferry queues, no scheduling anxiety, no luggage hauled up gangplanks. Just drive in, find your rhythm.

What it’s actually like depends heavily on when you arrive. July and August transform the west coast beaches into organised chaos — sun beds wall to wall, queues for the clifftop viewpoint at Porto Katsiki, road congestion that tests your patience. Come in May, June, September or October and the island recalibrates into something genuinely lovely. The light softens, the tavernas have tables free, and the sea is still warm enough to swim for hours. Egremni especially — reached by a long staircase descent — feels almost private in shoulder season, which is the only way it should be experienced.

Lefkada Town itself gets overlooked by people rushing south to the beaches. Spend an evening there. The earthquake-proof Venetian architecture with its distinctive corrugated metal facades is unlike anything else in Greece, the harbour is working rather than performative, and the restaurants serve food aimed at locals rather than tourists with sunburned shoulders. It’s where you eat well without trying too hard.

Vassiliki in the south has built a serious reputation among windsurfers for decades — the thermal winds funnel reliably through the bay each afternoon and the infrastructure around the sport is excellent. The lagoon near Lefkada Town pulls in kitesurfers for similar reasons. Neither spot is primarily a beach holiday destination, but if you’re on a board, the island is genuinely world-class.

The thing most visitors miss is the mountainous interior. Rent a car and drive up through olive groves and villages like Karya and Englouvi, where the pace is slow and the views across to the mainland are extraordinary. Nobody else is up there.

Lefkada suits couples, independent travellers, and anyone who actually wants to swim rather than pose. Families do fine in shoulder season. Party tourists will find it underwhelming. It rewards people who move at a considered pace and don’t need to be entertained constantly.
