Where to Stay in Split
Where to Stay in Split
Split gets busy, and if you don’t think carefully about where you sleep, you’ll either pay too much for too little or find yourself trekking uphill with luggage at midnight. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot is the area just outside the Old Town walls, particularly the streets between the Diocletian’s Palace perimeter and the Meštrović Gallery side of Marmontova Street. You’re close enough to walk everywhere but far enough that you’re not sleeping above a bar that plays Balkan pop until three in the morning.
The Varoš neighborhood is worth serious consideration. It’s a residential area with stone houses climbing the hill toward Marjan Park, genuinely local in feel, and mid-range apartments here offer space and character that cookie-cutter hotels can’t match. Expect to pay roughly 80 to 120 euros a night for a solid private apartment with air conditioning, which you absolutely need in July and August.
Staying inside the Palace itself sounds romantic and looks great on Instagram, but honesty matters here. The acoustics of those ancient walls mean noise travels in ways architects never anticipated. Light sleepers will suffer. If you’re committed to the Palace experience, book a place on the upper floors and bring earplugs.
Budget travelers should target Split 3, a residential district further from the waterfront. It’s unglamorous but practical, well-connected by bus, and genuinely affordable. Splurge travelers can look at the hotels along the Riva promenade, though the view premium is substantial and not always worth it.
The single booking mistake people consistently make is filtering only by price and ignoring the check-in policy. Many Split apartments have key collection points or require you to message a host who takes two hours to respond. During peak summer with a delayed ferry or flight, this creates real problems. Always confirm the exact check-in process before you commit, especially if you’re arriving after eight in the evening. Read the small print, message the host one question before booking just to test response time, and you’ll avoid the frustration that catches a surprising number of visitors completely off guard.
