# Alghero in January: Pretty Quiet, Pretty Damp
Let’s be straight with you: January in Alghero is not the postcard version. You’re looking at around 8 degrees most days, a decent chance of rain, and a town that has very much exhaled after the summer madness. Whether that sounds awful or ideal depends entirely on who you are.
The old town is genuinely beautiful in the cold and quiet. Those amber-lit limestone walls, the Catalan Gothic cathedral, the sea walls where you can walk for twenty minutes without passing another tourist – it all hits differently when you’re not shoulder-to-shoulder with people eating gelato. The Riviera del Corallo has a moody, almost melancholy atmosphere that some people absolutely love. If you’re the type who finds empty cobblestone streets romantic rather than depressing, this is your month.
The practical reality is that plenty closes down. Expect a decent chunk of restaurants and hotels to be shuttered for their winter break, particularly anything that leans heavily on beach trade. You’ll still find places to eat and sleep – the town doesn’t completely shut – but your options are reduced. Book ahead more than you think you need to, because the handful of places that do stay open can fill faster than you’d expect on a cold Wednesday in January.
Crowds are genuinely minimal. Flights are cheaper, accommodation is cheaper, and you’ll have Neptune’s Grotto and the archaeological sites essentially to yourself. The boat trips to the grotto may not be running due to sea conditions, so check before you factor that into your plans.
Worth it for whom? Solo travellers, couples wanting somewhere slow and atmospheric, photographers, people who find summer tourism genuinely exhausting. Not worth it for families expecting beach days, anyone who needs sunshine for their mental health, or people planning a classic Sardinian holiday.
**One practical tip:** Pack layers and a proper waterproof, then commit fully to aperitivo culture. The locals aren’t suffering – they’re just living normally. Join them at a bar around 6pm and January suddenly makes complete sense.
