# Barcelona in April: What It’s Actually Like
April is one of those months where Barcelona gets it mostly right, but you should go in with accurate expectations rather than the glossy magazine version.
The weather sits around 17°C, which sounds perfect until you’re standing in the shade at 6pm wondering why you only packed t-shirts. Days can genuinely be lovely – warm sunshine, comfortable for walking, pleasant terrace weather by lunchtime. But that 30mm of rain has to fall somewhere, and April delivers it in sudden, irritating bursts rather than polite steady drizzle. You’ll get three gorgeous days followed by one where the sky just opens. Pack a light jacket and something waterproof, not instead of each other but alongside each other.
Crowds are building but haven’t hit the summer wall yet. Easter week is the major exception – if you’re visiting during Semana Santa, prices spike, accommodation fills up, and the Sagrada Família queue becomes genuinely punishing. Outside of Easter, you’ll find the city manageable. The Barceloneta beach is mostly locals and brave tourists rather than an impenetrable mass of sunburned bodies. You can actually see the Picasso Museum without wanting to cry.
Everything is open. This isn’t a shoulder season where half the good restaurants are shut or attractions run reduced hours. The city is fully operational and happy to see you. Sant Jordi on April 23rd is a genuinely lovely local celebration – books and roses everywhere, the streets feel festive without being overwhelming.
**Is it worth it?** For most people, yes. It’s particularly good if you hate heat, prefer not to share every square metre with strangers, and want to eat at decent restaurants without a reservation made three weeks in advance. If you’re chasing beach weather or a proper summer atmosphere, you’ll feel slightly cheated.
**One practical tip:** Book Sagrada Família tickets the moment you know your dates. Not the week before. Not the night before. The moment. This is true year-round, but April’s Easter period makes it critical. The queue without tickets is genuinely brutal.
