# Olympos in January: The Off-Season Truth

Olympos in January is a genuinely strange experience, and whether that’s a good or bad thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is mild compared to northern Europe, sitting somewhere in the 10-15°C range most days, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s warm. The evenings get properly cold, and rainfall is a real possibility throughout the month. The Taurus Mountains that frame the valley tend to generate their own moody cloud systems, so you can go from bright winter sunshine to a damp, grey drizzle within the same afternoon. Pack layers and waterproofs rather than swimwear.

The crowds, or rather the complete absence of them, is the defining feature of an Olympos January. The backpacker scene that takes over this place in summer has entirely dissolved. Those famous treehouse camps and wooden bungalows? Most are locked up and silent. A handful of guesthouses stay open through winter, but you’ll want to confirm availability before you just turn up, because arriving to find everything shuttered is a real possibility.

The ancient Lycian ruins are still there and technically accessible, and wandering through them without another tourist in sight is actually quite atmospheric. The beach is deserted and dramatic rather than inviting. The Chimaera flames on the hillside above still burn year-round, and visiting them on a cold winter evening when you have the eternal fire essentially to yourself is genuinely memorable.

Who should come in January? Hikers, people who like solitude, photographers, or anyone doing the Lycian Way in a cooler window. It’s not for someone dreaming of a beach holiday or expecting a social scene.

Worth it? Cautiously yes, but only if you go in with realistic expectations and check that your accommodation is actually open.

**Practical tip:** Call your guesthouse directly before booking anything online. Booking platforms sometimes show places as available even when they’re completely closed for the season, and you don’t want to find that out after a long bus journey.
