Let’s be straight with you: July in Tunis is hot. Not “oh how exotic” hot, but genuinely, relentlessly, sapping-your-will-to-walk hot. Temperatures regularly push above 35°C, sometimes climbing toward 40°C, and the city holds that heat in a way that hits you the moment you step outside your air-conditioned refuge. Rainfall is essentially nonexistent — this is peak dry season, so you won’t be dodging showers, but you will be dodging shade patches like your life depends on it.

The medina, the souks, the ancient sites — they’re all still there and still functioning, but visiting them at midday in July is a genuine ordeal. Locals know this. You’ll notice the city has its own rhythm in summer: quieter in the brutal afternoon hours, then suddenly alive again toward evening when families emerge and the streets feel almost festive.

**Crowds are a mixed picture.** International tourism is relatively modest compared to southern European destinations, but July brings Tunisian diaspora home for summer holidays, so certain areas feel busy in a local, energetic way rather than a tourist-swarm way. The Bardo Museum and Carthage ruins will have visitors, but you’re unlikely to feel crushed.

Everything stays open. This isn’t a city that shuts down for summer — restaurants, cafes, the medina’s shops all keep going, though hours can shift later into the evening.

**Is it worth visiting in July?** Honestly, it depends on your tolerance for heat. If you wilt easily, consider April or October instead — you’ll get a far more comfortable experience. But if you’re someone who actually handles heat well, or you’re combining this with a beach stay on the Cap Bon coast or around Hammamet, July works fine. The light is extraordinary, the evenings are genuinely beautiful, and flights and accommodation are often cheaper than you’d expect.

**One practical tip:** Restructure your entire day around the heat. Out by 8am, back inside by noon, emerge again at 5pm. Fight this logic and you’ll suffer.
