Visiting Ios in June
# Ios in June: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness
June in Ios is genuinely one of the better times to visit, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent most of that trip resenting other tourists and sweating through every shirt I owned.
The weather is warm and reliably sunny for the most part – you’re looking at mid-to-high twenties Celsius, occasionally nudging thirty toward the end of the month. The sea is swimable but not quite the bathtub temperature it reaches later in summer. Rainfall is minimal, though early June can occasionally throw a surprise overcast day at you. Don’t panic if that happens, it won’t last.
The crowd situation is where June genuinely earns its reputation. Early June especially feels almost civilised. Chora, the main village, has its bars and restaurants open and actually operating at a pace where staff can look you in the eye. The famous party scene exists but it hasn’t fully ignited yet – you’ll find young travellers, some InterRail crowds, people in their twenties and thirties who planned ahead. By late June the volume creeps up noticeably, particularly on weekends, as Greek summer gets properly underway.
Mylopotas beach is accessible, sun beds are available without a 7am territorial towel-laying operation, and you can actually walk through Chora without being shoulder to shoulder with people taking the same photograph.
Everything worth visiting is open. Beaches, boat trips to Sikinos and Folegandros, the hilltop church with the ridiculous view – all operational. Restaurants are serving full menus rather than the stripped-back situation you sometimes hit in shoulder season.
Is it worth it? For most people, honestly yes. It suits couples, friend groups who want beaches and nights out without total chaos, and anyone who learned their lesson about August the hard way.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation before you go, even in early June. Ios is a small island with limited decent rooms, and the good ones disappear faster than you’d expect for what feels like off-peak.
