Visiting Elounda in June
# Elounda in June: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness
June in Elounda is genuinely one of the better times to visit, and I say that as someone who’s seen the place in peak August and nearly wept at the traffic queues into Plaka.
The weather is warm but not yet punishing. You’re typically looking at daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius, occasionally creeping toward thirty by late June. There’s usually very little rainfall – June is one of the drier months on Crete – though you might catch the odd brief shower early in the month. Nothing that would derail a day. The sea is properly swimmable by now, hovering around 23-24 degrees, which for most people is genuinely comfortable rather than just technically possible.
Crowds are building but haven’t peaked. Early June feels almost relaxed by Elounda standards – the waterfront tavernas have space, you can actually park, and the staff still have the energy to be pleasant. By the last week of June, European school holidays are kicking in and you’ll notice the difference. The luxury hotels like Blue Palace are operating fully and filling up fast, which pushes prices up and availability down.
Everything is open. That’s genuinely worth saying because shoulder season in some Greek destinations means shuttered restaurants and apologetic shrugs. Not here in June. Boat trips to Spinalonga are running regularly, water sports are available, and the restaurants along the main strip are in full swing.
Who is June actually right for? Couples and anyone who wants the full experience without August’s relentless intensity. Families with younger children who can travel before school term ends. Anyone who cares about sleeping with the window open without being drowned out by nightlife.
It’s also noticeably pricier than May, so manage expectations there.
**One practical tip:** Book your Spinalonga boat trip in advance, not because you’ll be turned away necessarily, but because the later morning departures book out and the early ones are significantly less sweaty in a good way.
