Visiting Gran Canaria in July
# Gran Canaria in July: What’s It Actually Like?
Let me be straight with you. July in Gran Canaria is not the blazing Mediterranean scorcher some people expect. The island sits off the African coast but catches the trade winds, which means temperatures hover around 24-27°C rather than the 40-degree furnace you might be bracing for. That said, the south around Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés genuinely bakes, while the north can feel almost mild and occasionally overcast from cloud that sits over the mountains like a damp hat.
Rainfall is minimal to nonexistent in July. You’re realistically not planning for rain. But “dry” doesn’t automatically mean “endless sunshine” either — that coastal haze and cloud can linger into late morning, which surprises people who booked expecting wall-to-wall blue skies from dawn.
**The crowds are real.** July is peak European summer, and the island knows it. The southern resorts fill up with families from Germany, the UK, and Scandinavia doing exactly what you’re thinking of doing. Maspalomas dunes, the waterpark, the main beaches — expect company. It’s not unbearable, but you won’t be discovering anywhere. Everything is open, prices reflect the demand, and restaurants near the tourist strips will have people outside them at 6pm clutching menus aggressively.
**Is it worth it?** Honestly, it depends entirely on what you want. If you’re a family with school-age kids and July is simply what you’ve got, Gran Canaria works perfectly well. The sea is warm enough, the infrastructure handles the volume, and kids genuinely love it. If you’re after a quieter, more atmospheric experience, you’d get more from May or October.
For solo travellers or couples wanting something relaxed, July feels a bit like being on a conveyor belt through the south. Head inland to Tejeda or Teror and you’ll remember the island has actual character.
**Practical tip:** Hire a car and leave the resort by 9am at least twice. The interior and the north are a completely different island, and most people never bother.
