Visiting Faro in May

Weather in May: Average high 24.1°C, 20mm rainfall.

# Faro in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot

Look, Faro doesn’t get the hype that the rest of the Algarve does, and honestly that works in your favour. Most people treat it as a flyover city – land, grab a rental car, disappear to Albufeira. Their loss, your gain, especially in May.

The weather in May is genuinely lovely without being punishing. You’re looking at around 24°C, which means you can actually walk around the old town, explore the cathedral, wander the Ria Formosa without feeling like you’re being slow-cooked. The 20mm of rain sounds worrying but it isn’t – that’s typically a handful of brief showers across the whole month, not sustained grey misery. You’ll probably hit one afternoon where clouds roll in for an hour, then it clears. Pack a light layer and forget about it.

Crowds are manageable in May in a way they absolutely won’t be by July. The old walled city – the Cidade Velha – feels like it actually belongs to locals still. Restaurants have space. You won’t queue for the boat trips out to the barrier islands in the Ria Formosa nature park, which are genuinely worth doing. Everything is open. This isn’t shoulder season where half the good places are still shuttered.

Is it worth visiting? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you like history, birdwatching, seafood, cycling flat coastal paths, and not having strangers’ sunburned elbows in your face, Faro in May is excellent. If you specifically came for a packed beach party atmosphere and wall-to-wall sun loungers, you might find it a touch quiet for your taste – though the beaches accessible by ferry are already beautiful and uncrowded.

**One practical tip:** Book the Ria Formosa boat trip directly with local operators at the harbour rather than through hotel desks or booking platforms. You’ll pay less, often get smaller groups, and the skippers tend to be far more interesting about what you’re actually seeing.

It’s an underrated city in an underrated month. Go.
