# Saranda in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is probably the sweet spot for Saranda, though I’d caveat that immediately by saying it depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather sits around 22°C, which feels genuinely pleasant rather than punishing. You can absolutely swim – the Ionian is cool but not cruel by mid-May, and you’ll feel like a hero for doing it while everyone else is still in jackets. The 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it’s spread across maybe four or five brief showers across the month. Nothing that ruins a holiday. More of a “wait an hour with a coffee” situation than a “pack waterproofs” one.

Crowds are building but haven’t exploded yet. The July and August version of Saranda is genuinely rammed – Albanian families, Kosovars returning for summer, and increasing numbers of Western Europeans who’ve cottoned on to how cheap and beautiful it is. In May you’ll notice tourism infrastructure warming up rather than operating at full scream. Restaurants are open, boat trips to Ksamil and the Blue Eye are running, but you’re not fighting for a sunbed or waiting forty minutes for food.

Ksamil itself, the little island-dotted beach a few kilometres south, is worth the short drive. In May it’s approaching its best without being overrun. The water colour alone justifies the trip.

What’s closed or reduced: a few of the more seasonal beach bars might still be half-operational, and some excursion boats run reduced schedules early in the month. By mid-May this largely sorts itself out.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, or anyone who genuinely wants to relax rather than party, yes, strongly. For people who need buzzing nightlife and maximum energy, the honest answer is wait until late June.

**Practical tip:** Book your Gjirokastër day trip early in your stay rather than leaving it. It’s only an hour inland, the UNESCO old town is remarkable, and if weather turns briefly, that’s the perfect day to go. Don’t waste a sunny beach day on it.
