# Rhodes in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
September in Rhodes is genuinely one of those times where the calendar works in your favour. The brutal July and August heat has backed off enough that you can actually walk around a medieval old town without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. At 26°C you’re still absolutely in shorts and swimming weather, but you can explore the Street of the Knights at midday without wanting to die, which in August is not a guarantee.
The sea is at its warmest right now, having absorbed three months of serious sunshine. This is the payoff for not coming in June when the water still has a memory of winter.
Crowds drop noticeably after the first week of September. The German and Scandinavian families have gone home for the school term, and that shift is real and immediate. You’ll still share the beach, particularly around Faliraki and the resort strips, but the old town’s narrow lanes become navigable again rather than a slow shuffle behind strangers.
Everything is still open. This is important. October is when restaurants start closing Tuesday and Wednesday, boat trips reduce schedules, and that taverna someone recommended shuts without warning. In September you get full summer infrastructure without full summer suffering.
Worth it for whom? Couples, solo travellers, anyone who genuinely wants to combine history with swimming rather than just poolside recovery. The old town is a proper medieval city that deserves actual attention, and September gives you the headspace to appreciate it. It’s also still excellent for families with younger children who aren’t yet in school.
The 20mm of rain for the month sounds reassuring and largely is, but it often arrives as one or two sharp afternoon thunderstorms rather than spread evenly. They clear fast and cool everything down nicely. Don’t cancel your plans, just don’t be on a boat when the sky turns grey.
**Practical tip:** Book your table at the restaurants inside the old town walls for 7pm rather than 9pm. You’ll eat with light still touching the stone, and it’s a completely different experience.
