Visiting Dahab in May

# Dahab in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Dahab, and it’s a bit of a secret compared to the winter rush.

The weather is warming up properly by May. Daytime temperatures sit somewhere in the low to mid-thirties Celsius, which sounds brutal until you realize Dahab’s dry desert air makes it feel more manageable than humid coastal resorts. The evenings cool down nicely, so sitting on a cushion at a waterfront restaurant at 9pm is genuinely pleasant rather than sweaty. Rainfall is basically nonexistent – this is one of the driest corners of Egypt, and May showers would be front-page news locally. Pack light, pack sunscreen, and don’t bother with an umbrella.

The Red Sea is warming toward its summer temperature around this point, which means excellent visibility for diving and snorkeling without the colder winter bite. The coral at the Blue Hole and the Canyon is doing its thing regardless of season, and May diving conditions are considered solid by most instructors working there.

Crowds are noticeably thinner than the December-to-March peak. European winter-escapers have gone home, Ramadan may have recently ended depending on the year, and the summer Egyptian family crowd hasn’t really arrived yet. This means you can actually get a table at El Capone without waiting, negotiate better prices on dive packages, and have stretches of the lagoon to yourself in the early morning.

Everything is open. Unlike some resort towns that half-shut in shoulder season, Dahab runs year-round. Dive centers, kite schools, the Lighthouse area restaurants – all operating normally.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, particularly if you’re a diver, a kite or windsurfer, or someone who wants the Dahab atmosphere without the backpacker-hostel density of peak season. It’s not ideal if you struggle with heat, since midday is genuinely fierce.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller guesthouses rather than through platforms. In May they have availability and will often throw in extras – airport transfers, discounted dive trips – just for the direct booking.
