# Marsaxlokk in April

If you’ve ever wanted to see one of Malta’s most photogenic fishing villages without feeling like you’re being processed through a tourist conveyor belt, April is genuinely one of the better times to show up.

The weather sits at a comfortable 18°C on average, which is warm enough to sit outside at a harbourside restaurant without a coat but cool enough that walking around doesn’t feel like punishment. You’ll get some rain — about 8mm across the month, so occasional showers rather than anything sustained. Pack a light layer and accept that one afternoon might get slightly damp. It’s not a big deal.

Crowds are manageable in April. The village gets absolutely swamped in summer, particularly on Sunday mornings when the famous market draws serious numbers from across Malta and beyond. In April that market still happens and it’s still worth going, but you can actually move around it, look at the lace and the fish without someone’s elbow in your face, and take photos of those iconic painted luzzu boats without waiting for a gap in the crowd. That’s a genuine luxury compared to July.

Most restaurants and stalls around the waterfront are fully open. This isn’t a seasonal ghost town situation — Marsaxlokk functions year-round because it’s a working village, not a resort. You’ll eat well. The seafood is the obvious call, and ordering whatever fish is fresh that day rather than defaulting to the tourist-menu options will serve you better.

Is it worth visiting in April? Yes, straightforwardly. It suits couples, solo travellers, photographers, and anyone who finds peak-season Malta a bit relentless. Families are fine too, though if you’re bringing small children, the entertainment offering beyond the harbour itself is limited — this is a couple-of-hours stop, not a full-day destination.

**Practical tip:** arrive for the Sunday market before 9am. By 10:30 the tour buses start arriving and the atmosphere shifts noticeably. Early is a different, quieter, better experience.
