# Sousse in February: The Honest Take

February is firmly off-season in Sousse, and honestly, that’s either a problem or the whole point, depending on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, sunny days around 14-16°C where you’re perfectly comfortable walking the medina in a light jacket, feeling quietly smug about the whole thing. Or you might get grey skies, a cold wind off the Mediterranean, and enough drizzle to make you question your life choices. There’s no reliable way to call it in advance. Pack layers and a waterproof and make peace with uncertainty.

What you won’t get is crowds. The beach strip that turns into absolute carnage in July and August is essentially empty. The seafront hotels are either closed or running on skeleton staff, prices are noticeably lower, and the medina actually feels like a place people live rather than a theme park designed to separate you from your money. Walking through the souks in February, vendors are more relaxed, conversations are more genuine, and the whole pace just shifts.

The practical reality is that some restaurants near the beach close entirely, and a handful of attractions run reduced hours. The museum is generally open, the medina is always worth your time, and the ribat is accessible. You’re not missing headline experiences, just some of the tourist infrastructure built specifically for summer visitors, which is arguably no great loss.

Is it worth going? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want guaranteed beach and swimming, this is the wrong month and Tunisia in general needs more warmth for that. But if you want to actually feel a North African coastal city without the performative exhaustion of high season, February delivers something more textured and real. It suits curious, independent travellers who find empty spaces more interesting than full ones.

**Practical tip:** Bring your own coffee ritual supplies or identify a local café early. The hotel breakfast buffets in low season can be genuinely depressing, and starting your day right matters more than you’d think.
