# Makarska in January: Pretty Much Yours Alone
Let’s be straight with you: Makarska in January is a completely different animal from the bronzed, heaving resort town you’ve probably seen in summer photos. The Biokovo mountain sits there looking dramatic and slightly threatening behind a town that is, let’s say, deeply asleep.
Nearly 10 degrees and over 150mm of rain means you’re dealing with proper cool, damp, Mediterranean winter weather. It’s not Arctic misery, but it’s genuinely grey and wet for stretches. The Adriatic is that particular shade of steel that looks beautiful in photographs and cold in person. Pack layers and a proper waterproof jacket, not a light raincoat.
The crowds situation is simple: there essentially aren’t any. The promenade is yours. You can stand on the beach and hear actual waves instead of thumping bass and screaming stag parties. Locals reclaim their town completely, and if you’re someone who finds that version of a place more interesting than the summer circus, you’ll genuinely enjoy it.
What’s open is the honest part people don’t always mention. Plenty of restaurants and cafes shut completely for winter. You won’t be stuck eating crackers from a petrol station, but don’t expect everything to be functioning. A handful of places stay open, locals eat there, the coffee is good, and the pace is genuinely relaxed. The Biokovo Nature Park and its famous Skywalk platform remains accessible, and honestly hiking up there on a clear winter day with the coast spread out below you is spectacular. You just need to check conditions first.
Is it worth visiting? That depends entirely on who you are. If you want beaches, cocktails and a buzzing atmosphere, January will actively depress you. If you want cheap accommodation, empty streets, dramatic coastal scenery and a Croatia that isn’t performing for tourists, it’s genuinely rewarding.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation that specifically confirms winter operation before you travel. Several places list as available online but are physically closed, and arriving to find your apartment building locked is a memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.
