# Nice in February: The Off-Season Truth

February in Nice is genuinely lovely if you know what you’re signing up for, and genuinely disappointing if you don’t.

The weather sits around 12°C, which sounds mild until you’re walking along the Promenade des Anglais with a cold wind coming off the Mediterranean. It’s not brutal, but it’s not the sun-soaked Riviera of your imagination either. Nearly 90mm of rain falls across the month, often arriving as proper grey, sustained downpours rather than quick showers. You’ll have beautiful clear days too — sometimes stretching into actual warmth if you find a sheltered square at noon — but you need to pack for both versions.

What February gets genuinely right is the city itself. Nice belongs to the Niçois again. The Old Town is walkable without squeezing past tour groups. Restaurants have actual tables available. Locals eat lunch at those restaurants. You can browse the Cours Saleya flower and food market without being elbowed and actually talk to the vendors. The Matisse Museum, the Chagall Museum, the excellent archaeology museum — all open, rarely crowded, properly enjoyable.

The downside is that some beach bars and seasonal spots are shuttered, and the coastal towns nearby like Èze or Villefranche-sur-Mer feel quieter to the point of sleepy. That’s either relaxing or deflating depending on your personality.

One major caveat: if you’re visiting during the Nice Carnival, which typically runs through February, the crowds return with force. It’s a legitimate spectacle worth seeing, but book accommodation early and expect higher prices and busier streets.

**Worth it for:** Couples wanting a relaxed city break, art lovers, food-focused travellers, anyone who hates crowds more than they love sunshine.

**Skip it if:** You need beach weather, you’re travelling with kids expecting Riviera glamour, or grey skies genuinely ruin your mood.

**Practical tip:** Bring layers you can actually peel off. That midday sun occasionally turns a cold morning into a surprisingly warm afternoon, and you’ll kick yourself wearing only a heavy coat.
